  3. Do you know the history of the Advent Calendar?

Using an Advent calendar to count the days until Christmas is a cherished family tradition in many homes, but where did Advent calendars come from? Well, like so many Christmas traditions embraced in the UK, the Advent calendar dates back to Victorian times, and actually comes from Germany! Let's take a look at the history of the traditional Advent calendar and nativity scenes.

The first known advent calendar was created in the late 1800’s for a child named Gerhard Lang by his German, Protestant mother. Inspired by his memories of the squares of cardboard with pinned tiny sweets she made to eat over the Advent period, Gerhard then went on to form a printing company that produced the first ever commercially available Advent calendars, featuring 24 little windows that could be opened, one for each day of Advent, and behind each window was a picture or poem related to the Nativity story.

  5. Advent Candles - glow your way through the festive season

In the depths of winter, a simple candle can spread a welcome glow and light up any home. These can be even more magical around Christmas time and a special Cards for Good Causes Advent Candle is perfect for counting down the precious days in the run up to the big day.

Single Advent candles are marked with the 24 days in December running all the way up to Christmas Eve. The candle is lit daily and burns down a little each day, to mark the passing of the days leading up to Christmas. Advent candles are traditionally white or ivory in colour, though can also come in other festive colours.

The tradition of advent candles is thought to be inspired by the German tradition of ‘Christingles’ where children place small, single candles in decorated oranges and carry them through the church lighting their way.

General guidelines for lighting colour Advent candle order: First: A green faith. 2. Blue hopes. 2. Love for Gold. 3. White-peace. A fifth. Purple-repentance. Fir

  8. The Power of Thinking of You Cards

It's easy to get busy and caught up in our own lives and neglect the relationships that matter to us. Oftentimes, we don't mean to let so much time go by without reaching out, but it happens. That's why it's always a nice surprise when we receive a "thinking of you" card or gift from someone we care about. These gestures remind us that we are loved and thought of, even when we're not able to be with our loved ones in person.

It’s National ‘Thinking of you week’ which runs from 19-25th September and has a simple message- Send a card, deliver a smile.

There are many reasons why sending a Thinking Of You card can be such a special gesture. For one, it shows that you care enough about the person to take the time to think of them and send them something to let them know. In a busy world, taking even just a few minutes out of your day to reach out to someone can mean a lot.

  9. Volunteering with Cards for Good Causes in 2022

It is just over a month now until our Christmas pop-up shops open, all of which operate on a day-today basis with an enthusiastic and dedicated team of volunteers. They are vital to the success of the shops and are an integral part of how our charity operates.

There are many reasons why people choose to volunteer. Did you know that volunteering actually increases levels of our feel good hormones? According to Christine Northrup (Northrup, C ‘The Wisdom of Menopause’ p99, Hay House Inc, 2021) volunteering increases our levels of oxytocin, which means volunteering not only feels good, but it is good for our health too.

There are many reasons why volunteers choose Cards for Good Causes and why so many volunteers return to us year after year.

1)One reason is that it is a short commitment. Ordinarily, the shops are open for 10 weeks from October to December in the run up to Christmas and our volunteers complete one session of 3 hours per
