Evidence suggests that the first Christmas card was sent from Michael Maier to King James 1 in 1611, with the message
“A greeting on the birthday of the Sacred King, to the most worshipful and energetic lord and most eminent James, King of Great Britain and Ireland, and Defender of the true faith, with a gesture of joyful celebration of the Birthday of the Lord, in most joy and fortune, we enter into the new auspicious year 1612”
However, this was a personal, one of a kind, exchange.

With the Christmas season coming to an end, Cards for Good Causes has launched a January Sale online to help raise further funds for charity including Alzheimer’s Society and Parkinson’s UK.
The sale includes both Charity Christmas cards and many beautiful gifts under £10. Charity Christmas card designs are from the 2021 collection so this is a last opportunity to buy some of the special designs from the year and support charity.
As a not-for-profit organisation, 100% of proceeds are given back to local and national charities - after operating costs, that’s at least 70p in every £1 taken from the sale of cards which is a much higher proportion than most other retailers. In the past ten years, Cards for Good Causes has given over £40 million to the charities it partners with. It represents more than 200 charities including Cancer Research, British Heart Foundation and RNLI as well as a number of small local charities.

The Christmas Countdown feels ever closer and that festive vibe is in many town centres. As shoppers start to prepare for the big day, there are so many Christmas options both online and on the high street but social responsibility and doing social good with the purchase of cards and gifts is becoming ever more important in today’s society.
