URGENT: Petersfield charity Christmas card shop needs a new home

The familiar site of the large red Father Christmas sign may be missing in Petersfield this year as a long-established Petersfield charity Christmas card tradition is in difficulty.

For almost 50 years a charity Christmas card pop-up shop has moved into different properties in Petersfield from October to December to sell Christmas cards on behalf of over 30 national and local charities. Hilda Gammon started the idea in her home and then relied on the goodwill of property owners to let her use empty spaces in the town for a few weeks each year to sell the cards. In 1969 Cards For Good Causes took on her wonderful idea and have since occupied 24 different sites in the town to continue the good work.

For the past six years the Cards for Good Causes outlet has been in Petersfield Library and business has thrived with the help of the manager and local volunteers. However, Hampshire Libraries have plans to renovate the library’s Butser Room and the shop is no longer able to operate there. Despite approaching local agents and a number of empty property owners Cards For Good Causes is running out of time to find a suitable site for 2017.

Regional Organiser, Judith O’Sullivan said,

“We are appealing to all property owners, landlords, agents and community venues for a good sized space, which is in or close to the town centre, with basic facilities. We can work around any space, shape and configuration as we bring all our own tables, stands and equipment. Ideally we would like around 1800 sq. feet. but would consider anything smaller at this stage. We set up at the beginning of October and trade until Christmas for a 3 month period. We trade 6 days a week Monday – Saturday and need continuous access to the property. We are able to pay a modest rent for this period and could occupy a space waiting for development or has been empty for some time.”

Anyone with anything to offer, be it an empty storage area, shop, office space, hall, or perhaps space for 2 portakabins, should contact Judith O’Sullivan on 01243 779584 / 07802 487050 or email Judith.osullivan@cfgc.org.uk ASAP.

Staffed by a team of local volunteers, the Petersfield pop-up shop is part of a network of more than 300 temporary shops run by Cards for Good Causes, the UK’s largest multi-charity Christmas card organisation. It represents more than 250 charities including Cancer Research UK, Barnardo’s, NSPCC, Alzheimer’s Society and RNLI as well as a number of local charities such as Canine Partners and The Rosemary Foundation in Petersfield.

Phil Willoughby, Shop Manager for Cards for Good Causes says:

“Buying charity Christmas cards is one of the simplest ways to support good causes this festive season and we stock one of the widest ranges of Christmas cards anywhere. The proceeds from every card or product sold make a vital contribution to the work of the charities that we partner. Petersfield is one of our longest running and busiest shops and we just cannot let this disappear this year.

In the past ten years, charities have received more than £40 million from Cards for Good Causes, representing at least 70p in every pound, out of which the charities pay for the production and distribution of their Christmas cards and any VAT.
